When you first hear Vocalist Kate Westin perform you might think that you know her…from somewhere. Silky-rich and evocative, her sound is at once inviting and familiar, yet somehow all her own. Her recipe for connection is simple and winning: great songs—standards to contemporary—interpreted with such sincere investment that performance is fused with identity. The illusion of familiarity is completed with her cast of A-list musicians who lend their own mastery to her groove, delivering old-school chops with stylish, steady conviction. Maybe not-so-simply, Kate and her crew aim to seduce the audience into feeling like old friends at their most intimate party. And as her long-time fans will relate, it’s only an illusion the first time out.
Kate’s recent performances feature her “After Hours” band with veterans Hans Brehmer on piano, John Anderson on Sax, Frank Seeburger on guitar, Osama Ififi on bass and Edward Littlefield on drums. Kate’s website can be found at www.katewestin.com. There you’ll find recordings from live shows, a photo gallery of her crew, and a sign-up page for her mailing list that announces upcoming performances.
Drawing from a broad range of artists and musical styles, Kate’s sound is defined less by genre and more by freedom to interpret wonderful songs spanning time and classification. Contemporary jazz artists such as Molly Johnson, Amos Lee, Melody Gardot, Madeleine Peyroux, and Catherine Russell fit with Kate’s sensibilities. Her love of music began early in life, studying piano and performing as a vocalist throughout her school years. After life and the demands of a professional career intruded, Kate was encouraged to return to performance by a professional cadre of practicing musicians. Since her return, she has headlined at Seattle area jazz clubs including Tula’s, Egan’s and North City Bistro.
